Programs Overview

Services are designed for families at risk of abuse or neglect, and are entirely voluntary.

PSSC focuses on the entire family, not the child alone.

PSSC serves children and families in their own homes and communities. We accomplish this through two main programs:

Kids n' Kin works on the premise that family members create the strongest foundation for children. Kids n' Kin supports families in which a relative caregiver is raising a child that is not biologically her own. Oftentimes, this will be a grandmother who is raising grandchildren because the parents are unable to do so. These families face enormous challenges.

Kids n' Kin helps caregivers and the children overcome these challenges, and to keep children "out of the system" and in a safe, nurturing home with family members.  Kids n' Kin includes a special focus on children with incarcerated parents, since many of the caregivers we serve are raising children because the biological parents are in jail or prison. All services are provided in the family's own home.

Families and Schools Together (FAST) is a national research-based model. The program brings together families, schools, and community members for 8 weeks of group programming, followed by 22 monthly group meetings. Participating parents are more engaged with their children at home and in school; children have fewer behavioral issues and improved academic performance. PSSC hosts FAST in 41 elementary throughout Philadelphia.

Community-based parenting support groups are also offered in South Philadelphia and West Philadelphia in association with schools, churches and Family Centers.  Groups utilize the MELD curriculum, a national model of family support and development.  PSSC is a certified MELD provider.
